Das Kino und der Vogel

This morning I woke up to go and see "The Artist" with Hannah. Beforehand, I stopped into the bakery to get some food to smuggle into the theater for breakfast! When I met Hannah, we walked to the theater across the street from her house and went inside. I opened up my wallet, to find that I had no Bargeld (cash), but only my debit card. Hannah bought her ticket first, and then I asked if I had to pay with cash or if I could pay with my card. He said, no. Only cash accepted. So from there I had to run to the bank, get some money, and then head back to the theater to get my ticket. I got to my seat just as the curtain was moving aside for the screen. Now I have to say, I am a constant food smuggler in theaters, because who really wants to pay all that money for snacks when you can just get it elsewhere or bring it from home!? But I have never smuggled food into a silent movie before. And as it turns out, it was really hard to eat my food during the movie without the explosions, the dialogue, or any car chases to drown out the sound of my bag crinkling or Hannah's wrapper when she tried to open it. It was a pretty sad sight. Might have even been funny enough to be a skit on some show. Two girls try to smuggle food into a silent film but their food makes too much noise. We gave up on the food and just sat back and enjoyed after trying for a few minutes.
The movie was great. It was almost entirely a silent film, with only words in the middle and at the very end. It reminded me very much of Singin' In The Rain (aka my favorite movie ever)! The movie dealt with Hollywood and a few stars in the 1920s at the time where talking pictures came and turned everything upside down for the stars who knew only how to exaggerate and pantomime. Here's a clip from Singin' In The Rain:

So with all that fun, we left the theater after the movie and were bombarded by the sunlight. The theater was so dark inside that I felt like Indiana Jones who had to keep his eyes shut out of fear that if I opened them my whole face would melt off.
There were also people across the street dressed up in crazy costumes, carrying instruments and signs. I later discovered that today was the Fasching (carnival) parade here in Tuebingen. This made studying for finals impossible, as the drums and music were both so loud that I could not concentrate. I snapped a picture of the people outside my building when I got back. These were just a few stragglers heading to the main event:

So after giving up on studying for the day, I decided that a nap was in order. When I awoke, it was to a very familiar noise.

For the past month, there has been a bird who has been visiting my window sill and likes to sit there and poo. He leaves a nice little pile, and might sit there to hide from the cold weather now. I can always hear him when he lands on the window sill, because he makes a lot of noise hitting the window and the shutters. One day I was standing at my desk, and he just flew up and stared at me for a minute, and I stared back, until we both turned and went back to what we were doing. This crazy bird, I feel, is here to stay, so I have decided to name him Alfred (in honor of Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds).

Am I the cause of all this? Am I evil?! We may never know.

So finally, without any more delay, here is the picture I shot of Alfred:
Charming isn't he. He's my own little stalker bird. Lovely. Now if only I could train him to carry messages and to stop using my ledge as a bathroom.

Well that's all for today. I'm going to try and do some homework now that the music has died down. I hope this has been entertaining enough. I always love a good movie clip or two!
